I got my invite, logged on and and you get the first impressions.  I caught Leo Laporte at the same time and we walked through some features  However, more fun was had after I stopped screencasting as I figured out some little tricks, and one bug.

Nokia, yes the smartphone maker with 40% of mobile handsets worldwide, has slithered along the past couple years consuming some excellent location services and folding their technology and expertise into the mix.  I personally see the possibility of Nokia to explode on the scene with the possibility of an amazing location and time based social network and friend finder service it would have many moving to that platform.  Let's peek at the purchases:
  • 2006 - Gate5 is purchased.  They provided wireless mapping, routing and navigation
  • 2007 - Navteq is purchased for an amazing $8 billion giving them an edge on location data as a service
  • 2008 - Plazes, from Berlin, is purchased adds another 13 people to the team.  I personally have utilized Plazes since early beta and they layer GPS, MAC address and wifi access points to pinpoint your location.  They also allow you to post where you will be, not just where you are or have been.  A swift move by Nokia.  This added hundreds of thousands of locations (per news articles) to the Nokia location landscape.
  • 2009 - Dopplr is now purchased.  Before TripIt and some others, this was the go to site for road warriors.  There is history on restaurants, hotels and many other venue types already built into the system.  Timelines were established and sharing your trips was easy.  There is already an iPhone application which adds an interesting twist, but I don't see that vanishing.  Why not expand the userbase as far as possible?

In my opinion, all of this bases around the fact that Nokia needs a major stake in application services to compete with Apple and the iPhone.  The Ovi Store, the Nokia answer to the AppStore, is where you go to load and find your applications for their smartphone.  Having a device that runs numerous apps but is the leader in location services is a wave that young professionals and youth would quickly purchase if it means locating friends and planning events easier.  Integration into the address book would be a simple click to select someone, select a highly rated restaurant, make the reservation and hook them into the invitation in a few clicks.  When I walk down the street my phone tells me that Bob is only two blocks over at a local pub.  When I land in London it tells me that 4 business contacts are in the area or have plans to be near me based on my upcoming itinerary.

Taking location services and turning it into face-to-face contact is the next move in this type of social networking

Cultivating your Twitter followers is a process that takes time, energy and planning.  Many people are skipping the processes associated with communication, engagement and quality to inflate their numbers by dumping chemical additives and building production plants instead of a more friendly neighborhood attitude.  I personally enjoy this approach as I learn more about who I want to follow and the materials they offer to me in return.

Organic - This is the path of more work, but with greater results.  You work together with others in the community and donate quite a bit of time.  But the results are healthier relationships, trusted communication and trust in your knowledge.  You learn the strengths of each area of others in your community and they become excellent filters of information on topics they might be experts in or are striving to learn.  Many gems of knowledge are found from these types of people.

You do not:
  •  use auto-following services in hopes that you get followed back
  • ignore conversation threads
  • only post link to products you sell and only to articles, have conversation around them
  • only post referrer links in hopes of getting sales
  • never respond to any message sent to you

Chemical users blend a formula of automation so they never interact.  They are generally unaware of who is following them and who they are following back.  The climb is the supposed reach of numbers.  However, a lot of both categories, followed and following are automation tools themselves.  Responses never seem to happen at any time with no feeling of personality behind the posts.  Unfortunately, someones work who I admire has fallen into this category, Guy Kawasaki.  He could have great personal communication with tons of followers but it became AllTop driven instead of making AllTop its own persona.  Some of the stars that take time to watch their actual followers and respond earn some respect.  Others that use a team of interns they hired to make postings don't.  If you do not have the time, then don't do it. Nothing lost.  Everyone is busy.

They do the following:
  • Auto-following tools are deployed
  • auto-responders are deployed to fake engagement with canned responses
  • referrer links are embedded in most tweets
  • hire people to send tweets for them

Ever since I talked about losing Twitter to the masses, I have noticed this trend and uptake also.  It was to be expected in this medium as it happened across instant messaging and email systems.  The computerized growth that then turned to producing spam filters as we did for almost a whole week on EverythingTwitter.

Last year I made an OPML of the Top 150 social media blogs, and just this last week Evan Carmichael posted his listing of the 2009 Top 50 Social Media bloggers.  A great collection.  But once again I needed it for my feedreader and so do you!

So I present the OPML file for you to place into any feedreader, including Google Reader.  We should also  connect on GOogle Reader to share interesting news feeds.  Feel free to add me idoNotes at gmail

A walkthrough screencast of the new social friend aggregator client Orsiso that runs on Adobe Air.  It was a quick download and easy to configure, although there are a lot of options.

They will need to add plenty of more social networks to make this a real draw into becoming a client for the masses.  It seems they are in direct competition with Digsby and other client aggregators, yet they are providing much more function.  I am trying to see the revenue model and I would imagine an ad based client will come for free, or with limited function.  The upgrade would offer more and no ads.  The question will be if it is worth it.

It currently supports such sites as Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, Bebo and more with all of the major chat clients.

This will take far more time than I have today. I will start with I was born and still live in St. Louis, MO. Even though for a couple years I was never, ever here and always on the road, this is smack in the middle of the US. Everything is just a few hour flight. That part is nice. No beach/ocean/coast isn't the best. But with the travel I make up for it.

Don't Panic

Looking to find me in person? Here is where I will be.
