The Social Networker

by Chris Miller at 10:42:02 AM on Friday, June 1st, 2007
Before I get into block quoting the newsletter for you, let me make my peace.  Half the items are things they didn't do.  Nowhere does it address the outages.  How can one complain about a free service?  Really you can't.  But the whining is all over the Internet when they are down.  It does appear they are looking for more developers.  I take this to mean making the code better and more features.  But where is the listing for more infrastructure and architect positions?  This is where many of the social netowrking teamsd fall flat.  They build excellent products, but do not think bandwidth and scaling appropriately.

Hello Twitter-ers,

There's been a bunch of forward motion at Twitter HQ in two weeks.
We've done significant work on our infrastructure to make things
better, we've built some new features, and we're adding new ways
to interact with Twitter. We'd love to have you come by and check
things out! http://twitter.com

Support for @Replies

We noticed a whole bunch of Twitter-ers adopting a new way to
communicate specifically to individuals in a public way by adding
an @ symbol before a username like this: "@biz thinking I'll get a
soy latte too!" To make this experience a bit better, we added a
few features to support this behavior.

- The Replies Tab will display an archive of @replies
- @Replies are followed by an 'in reply to' link for context
- @username automatically links the username to the profile

Facebook Application

Last week, Facebook.com released a new applications platform and
invited other companies to create cool apps that can be used
inside Facebook. Twitter was among the first to create such an
application. So, if you're a Facebook user and you like Twitterin',
then please consider downloading the Twitter Facebook application:

MTV Movie Awards

This Sunday Aziz Ansari, Rob Huebel, Paul Scheer, and Jason Woliner
from the sketch comedy Human Giant will all be twittering during
the pre-party, red carpet, and ceremony of the MTV Movie Awards.
If you want to watch along or just get the scoop from behind the
scenes, text FOLLOW HUMANGIANT to 40404. We've set something up so
you'll get updates from each of the guys before, during, and after
the awards. The MTV Movie Awards are live Sunday June 3 at 8PM/7C.
Should be fun, check out Human Giant: http://tinyurl.com/ytqzbd

Netvibes Module

Netvibes is a very popular personalized start page you can use to
assemble your favorite web stuff in one customizable spot.
Yesterday, the nice folks over at Netvibes included Twitter in
their default set of ready-made modules. Head over to Netvibes.com
and click the Twitter link in the lower left-side column -- in
about three seconds you'll be receiving and sending Twitters on
your new start page. Or, click here: http://tinyurl.com/ys8pq4

Mobile Tips

Just as you would text FOLLOW HUMANGIANT to 40404, you can do with
any Twitter user. If you text FOLLOW BIZ to 40404, you'll start
getting my updates. Likewise, you can LEAVE BIZ when you're sick
of me. There's more hints on our Lingo Page. Keep in mind that
40404 is the US shortcode so it's different for the rest of the
world. To set up your mobile to work with Twitter and find out
what your country's specific code is, visit the Phone & IM page.

We're Hiring!

Twitter is looking for a Ruby on Rails Developer and a Senior
Engineer. If you or anyone you know is interested in helping us
make Twitter awesome, please have a look at our jobs page:
http://twitter.com/help/jobs. The jobs are full time in our lovely
San Francisco office. We have a little building all to ourself
that opens up to South Park -- a secret little patch of green right
in the city with a great burrito shop and a short walk to the bay.
It's really quite nice even if I do say so myself.

Character Bio:

This will take far more time than I have today. I will start with I was born and still live in St. Louis, MO. Even though for a couple years I was never, ever here and always on the road, this is smack in the middle of the US. Everything is just a few hour flight. That part is nice. No beach/ocean/coast isn't the best. But with the travel I make up for it.

Don't Panic

Looking to find me in person? Here is where I will be.
